Local Government Pension Scheme
If you have contracted hours, you will be automatically enrolled into the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), unless you choose to opt out. You also have the option to join if you’re not on contracted hours. If you have a pension from a previous employer, this can be transferred into the Dorset County Council scheme.
You may be entitled to payment of one professional subscription, if this is required as part of your role.
Local Government Pay Awards
Annual pay negotiations take place nationally between the Employers’ Organisations and recognised unions. We implement any agreed national pay awards.
Staff discounts are available to all employees on a range of services including Leisure Centre memberships, local shops, food and drink as well as selected local businesses that offer discounts on a range of services from a car valet to a discount phone package.
Car Parking Permits
All employees have the opportunity to park in three of Dorchester’s town car parks close to South Walks House with a great value permit purchasing scheme. There is the flexibility of purchasing a combination permit, which may be made up of single days for employees that only require parking arrangements for part of the week.
There is also the opportunity to purchase a Park and Ride permit to use in the Swannery Car Park in Weymouth on weekdays in order to park in this car park and either walk to Commercial Road to catch a bus or King Street to catch a train.
Car Purchase Scheme
The assistant car purchase scheme allows permanent employees to buy a car, with deductions taken from their monthly salary.
Childcare Voucher Scheme
The Childcare Voucher scheme is run by Co-operative Employee Benefits and allows employees to sacrifice part of their salary in return for childcare vouchers, which can be used for registered childcare providers. Employees make savings on tax and national insurance contributions.
Health, Wellbeing and a Work Life Balance
Working hours – Flexi and Coreless Scheme
Most roles within the partnership operate on coreless flexi, giving you enhances flexibility and work life balance through working hours of 7am – 7pm. There are some roles that do not operate within this scheme, due to business needs.
The scheme is a system for recording working hours, which does not rely on centrally imposed core hours, but is developed locally by managers and employees within their teams. The aims of the scheme are to:
- Improve work/life balance
- Meet the needs of the service
- Promote more flexible working practices
- Reduce the need for overtime and other non-standard working hours payments
A key initiative for the partnership is to develop more flexible and smart working arrangements to allow employees to work both on site and remotely. This means you will be less reliant on working from an office and will be able to work from other locations, such as local offices, partnership offices and at home allowing a greater work, life balance for employees who are more productive and efficient at work.
If you use a computer screen for a substantial part of your working day and you will be eligible to have eye tests at no cost and a contribution towards glasses required solely for computer screens.
Up4Change is a group of enthusiastic employees from across the partnership with the mission to improve the health and wellbeing of everyone! The group set up activities and initiatives to promote healthy living, wellbeing and social events for anyone in the partnership to attend. They also support fundraising efforts for national and local charities. The targets of the group are to:
- Pro-actively maintain a healthy workforce by meeting the needs of individual employees and the council.
- Promote awareness of the benefits of healthy living through good communications.
- Develop a service of sports, social and general activities meeting the needs of all employees.
- Encourage employees to walk, cycle or use other modes of transport involving physical activity.

Dorset is a great place to live and work, offering a wonderful contrast of beautiful countryside and stunning coastline. The majority of roles are based at our modern offices at South Walks House in Dorchester, where collaboration and innovative ways of working are encouraged. This location is in the heart of Dorchester and as well as offering kitchen facilities on each floor, dedicated IT support, and a friendly working environment, you can also use the patio area to enjoy the views over the wonderful Dorset countryside.
Support and Entitlements
The partnership offers a generous annual leave entitlement. You will receive 24 days of annual leave, rising to 29 days after 5 years of service, plus bank holidays and Christmas given days.
Maternity, Adoption and Paternity Leave
Generous maternity, adoption and paternity leave.
Equality and Diversity
The partnership recognises the positive value of diversity and promotes equality. Reasonable adjustments to the recruitment process will be made to ensure that no applicant is disadvantaged because of their disability, and applications from individuals from diverse backgrounds are actively welcomed.
We support and encourage positive employee relations by collective bargaining and solve issues by discussion and agreement. All employees are encouraged to be a member of a trade union, although we equally support the individual right of choice in such matters. We have union collective and recognition agreements with Unite, Unison and GMB.
The Volunteering scheme provides employees with the opportunity to volunteer for an organisation who is working to improve the social, economic, or environmental wellbeing of our communities.
