Learning and development - Purbeck District Council
All new employees receive induction training when joining the Council. On their first day new employees receive an Induction Booklet to be worked through during the first 3 months of employment with their line manager. During the induction period new employees have the opportunity to meet with the Chief Executive, Human Resources, Health & Safety and other key personnel to enable them to understand how the Council works and its culture. The purpose of induction is to ensure that new employees feel part of the team as quickly as possible. Our overall outcome is that new employees get a good feel for the organisation and will continue to believe that they made the right decision in joining Purbeck District Council
The staff appraisal scheme is called the Appraisal and Development Review (ADR). All employees undertake a formal annual review around April/May. The purpose of the ADR is to review performance, discuss achievements, explore areas of concern and, set objectives and training needs for the coming year. A 6 month review is held in October/November to assess progress.
Work related training
On completion of the ADR process the Council will identify a Corporate Training Programme which sets out how the annual Corporate Training Budget will be used. We support work related training including qualification courses, Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and other developmental courses. In addition, we offer 24 hour access to an online e-learning portal for employees to use in their own time, on their home computer, to help improve their skills. The effectiveness of training is reviewed on an annual basis.

The organisation is committed to meeting the requirements of the Investors in People Standard and has been a recognised Investor in People organisation since 2007.
The Council is committed to providing adequate training budgets to support training and development programmes.
Purbeck District Council supports the apprenticeship scheme when it has suitable opportunities to offer.
